Removal of Gearcase - 40, 50, and 60HP Standard and LongShaft, 75HP Standard Shaft

  1. To prevent accidental starting of the engine, disconnect the charge coil connector and battery cables.

  2. Remove the propeller and mounting hardware. Inspect the propeller for spun hub.
  3. Remove the oil level "A" and the fill/drain "B" plugs (oil level first) to drain lubricant from the gearcase. Inspect the lubricant for water, which will give it white milky overheating which will give the lubricant black color and burned odor. Reinstall the plugs temporarily after draining the gearcase.
  4. Remove the shift rod retaining screw. If necessary remove the electric 5tarter motor.
  5. Mark the trim tab and the gearcase before removing the trim tab so tab is put back in the same position. Remove the trim tab retaining screw "C" and the trim tab from the gearcase.
  6. Using 5/8 inch thin wall socket, remove the countersunk screw "D" with the lockwasher.
  7. Remove the four gearcase tinig screws "E" with lockwashers (two each port and starboard).
  8. Remove the gearcase assembly from the exhaust housing, being careful not to bend the shift rod. 40, 50 and 60 standard shaft models the lower inner exhaust housing may come out with the gearcase. Secure the gearcase in suitable holding fixture.
