Disassembly of Stern and Swivel brackets
1977 Johnson/Evinrude 55HP Outboard motors
a. Using #4 Truarc pliers (Special Tool #307429) remove Truarc ring from bottom of pivot and steering shaft assembly. See Figure 6-11. Shaft is splined to bracket and secured with OMC Nut Lock. Heat spline and pivot shaft and remove mount bracket from pivot shaft. See Figures 6-12 and 6- 13.

NOTE
On reassembly, coat spline with OMC Nut Lock. See Figure 6-13.
b. Upper and lower seals in swivel bracket should be removed. Upper bushing slides out.
c. Remove the thrust rod and retainer, and the thrust rod spring from the stern bracket. Remove tilt and reverse lock linkage from stern bracket.
d. Remove two screws fastening port and starboard stern brackets. Remove tilt tube, nut, and washers from top of stern brackets.
