It is possible to remove the lower gearcase assembly without removing the power head from the motor. However, if disassembly of the exhaust housing is reqUired, it is necessary first to remove the power head.
The gearcase assembly may be removed from the exhaust housing and power head as follows:
a. Remove upper motor cover and disconnect spark plug wires.
b. Remove 6 screws attaching gearcase to exhaust housing or gearcase extension if used. See Figure 6-3.
c. Separate gearcase from exhaust housing enough to expose shift rod connector. Remove upper con- nector screw. See Figure 6-4.
d. Remove gearcase assembly from exhaust housing, taking care to avoid damaging driveshaft, which ex- tends upward to the power head. Place gearcase on bench for disassembly. See Figure 6-5.
