Overheat inspection for all models
1996 Johnson/Evinrude 2HP - 8HP outboards
If the engine has overheated, the following items should be checked for damage.
- Check the water cover and exhaust cover gaskets for leakage.
- Remove the cylinder head.
- Inspect the pistons, rings and cylinders for damage.
- Inspect the cylinder block and cylinder head for warpage.
- Check the water passages for damage or missing water deflectors (3 - 4 Deluxe models).
Note Water deflectors MUST be in correct position in the water ~ passages. Loose deflectors may lodge in the water pas- sages or allow leakage that would interfere with proper water circulation. - Replace the cylinder head and gasket.
- 5-8 models - inspect the thermostat for proper operation.
- Check all of the powerhead screws for proper torque.
