Due to the construction of the starter motor, maintenance operations are generally limited to periodic checking for looseness of mounting. Unless it is certain that the starter motor requires attention, do not remove it for overhaul. thorough check should made ! the battery, cables, starting solenoid, and switch as outlined in the Trouble Check Chart in Section 2.
Check the Prestolite starter motor using the load test. With 12 volts applied to the starter motor, maximum current should 90 amperes and minimum speed should be 5500 rpm. Check Bosch starter load test. With 12.0 to 12.4 volts applied, maximum current draw should be 25 amps, speed 6000 to 7000 rpm. See Figure 7-5.
Remove starter motor for test as follows:

. Disconnect red lead from starter motor.

b. Remove two nuts and bolt from electrical bracket, move electrical component bracket as required to obtain access to lower starter mounting screw. See Figure 7-6.

. Remove three starter mounting screws and re- move starter. See Figure 7-6.
